Doubt cast over bat habitat plans: Mayor, council

While bats have been documented in urban areas for decades, bat habitat plans in Toronto do not yet appear to be in place. The Canadian Conservation Genetics and Genomics Institute found that some sites of study where the bats might still be living, in urban areas, are already protected.

In Toronto, the city had no new bat 바카라management plan, spokeswoman Susan-Gosho Kim said.

(City of Toronto ) “We know there are bats, but they are still in hibernation because of environmental issues. If we didn’t have to prot바카라사이트ect them … they would be in a very difficult situation. They don’t want to breed.” Kim said. “There are things we have to be careful of. Our concern is with the bats in Toronto who are currently protected.”

She said that although city staff would consider whether the bat habitat plan “is working as a deterrent to other bats from entering Toronto, we do not have the legislation or other policy in place.”

“We want to see bats in Toronto not just for the reasons that we’re thinking about, we want to see them for the benefits we’re bringing to Toronto, so if they are having a bad time, there are ways that we can help,” Kim said.

Kim said there is still no list of all Toronto-a바카라사이트rea bat species that are currently protected, and that research may reveal new species.

Mayor

Giancarlo Polosa, leader of the Progressive Conservative Toronto-GTA Local 439, criticized the city’s lack of plan “to help ensure Toronto’s future bats are well and truly protected.”

A city report revealed that there are no plans to protect any of Toronto’s urban bats, and that one city bat that would have been protected under a bat management plan was “considered extinct.”

Polosa said the city needs to make better use of its bats, noting that only 12 per cent of the city’s bat population is found in the city’s urban areas. He also said the city needs to be more concerned with the impact of the city’s high population of bats on the environment.

“We have to protect those bats so they can find the best possible habitat. The most natural habitat for bat is in the urban areas. That is a priority for Toronto and has not received enough attention from the city and the public,” Polosa said.
